About Green Harmony Tours
Since his German born, landscape architect father took young Roland on annual pilgrimages of sorts to Germany to visit relatives, friends, and gardens, parks, and most significantly the biennial Federal Garden Show (BUGA), As Roland became an adult and his passion and training in sustainable living grew, he noticed a distinct dichotomy between the society in the USA and Germany. He noticed how the US's society was generally wasteful, consumed much resources, had deteriorating infrastructures and cities, had very little beautiful public spaces, had fossil fuel energy policies stuck in the dark ages, no universal health care, had few mass transit systems, and the gulf between rich and poor grew. Contrastingly, he saw in Germany a more efficient society, with well designed and maintained infrastructure and cities always improving, with numerous public gardens, parks, and pedestrian zones, became the world leader in renewable energy development and technology, successful universal health care, convenient mass transit, and a society that took care of the less well off. All of this occurred with the additional burden of reintegrating the former East Germany . Roland wanted to share all he had learned from these special places and to share the wonderful green lifestyle that has grown immensely in Germany .
Roland started Green Harmony Tours in order to show people the amazing green living society that Germany now has. Each tour is once every two years and is designed to be an ecotour, so as sustainable as possible. Therefore on our tours we walk as much as possible, bicycle, and use mass transit as much as possible, we stay in green or centrally located hotels, we dine at green and vegetarian friendly restaurants, we shop at green stores, all the tours are carbon offset, and we stop at the greenest places in Germany thereby supporting their continued existence.
